The conference theme of Embracing the future will be explored through four themes: Community, Collections, Creativity and new media, Capability and careers. Each theme will explore opportunities, challenges and trends.

Community

As a community hub, the public library of the 21st century reaches a diverse range of client groups with differing expectations. This theme will consider changing demographics of our communities and impact on service design and delivery, as well as the use and appreciation of our buildings as public spaces.

Collections – keeping books relevant

Concepts to be explored could include: developing our collections – bestseller vs the long tail approach; the changing role and format of the reference collection; boutique and themed branch libraries; merchandising and managing the paradox of choice.

Creativity and new media

Our libraries are exploring ways engage communities on the possibilities and opportunities that can be provided. Libraries offer a stimulating range of events and exhibitions and programs that promote creativity. Our systems are also providing opportunities for our clients to be content creators and ‘mash-up’ our content.

Capability and careers

In such a dynamic landscape, how do we as managers ensure that we are engaging our staff with the “new agenda” for public libraries. Issues to be explored could include staff retention strategies, training and professional development, changing roles for library workers. As leaders of metropolitan libraries do we have the capacity to be “fearless leaders”?
